Am Back!

I am back from the trek/tour and am doing good ;)

What was intended to be a 7 day trek was cut short to a 2 day trek and 5 day sight-seeing/ travelling.

We could only manage to trek for around 8km(till Lamaydura) after which we had to abandon the trek owing to poor visibility and dropping temperatures. Though we were trekking at sub-zero temperatures , the further decline in temps led us to call it off and bow in front of Mother Nature. But it was beautiful one - the region had experienced the first snowfall after 1999.

After calling off the trek we went ahead to Darjeeling and Gangtok.

I havent yet blogged it (hope to do it by Monday).

Destination : Sandakphu

Me going on a 7 day trek in Eastern Himalayas - to a place called Sandakhpu. This borders Nepal and offers best views of the four of the world's five highest peaks - Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse in a continuous snow-clad arc; and also Kancendzunga.

We will be trekking at an altitude of 10,000-12,000feet.

We will be following the route as mentioned in this map : http://www.geocities.com/bhuniahoo/sandak_map.ppt (Check out the views in this ppt).

We will try to stick to this route , but if the weather changes, then we might have to reconsider this. More details w.r.t Sandakphu can be found here and here.

Hope the weather god co-operates and we have a clear sky and an amazing trek.

Will be leaving on 16 Feb,2007 and back to Bangalore on 28 Feb , 2007.

Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary pics Photos here

Bitten by the "no-more-weekends-in-Bangalore" syndrome myself and Arvind decided to ride to Somnathpura and Ranganthittu on SUnday.

Somnathpura is situated on the left bank of the Cauvery river. The keshava temple was built in 1268AD by Somnatha Dandanyaka, an illustrious General of the Hoysala king Narasimha III(1254-1291 AD) and named after him.

This temple is a perfect example of the Hoysala style of architecture. It has three sanctums on the West,South and North to Keshava, Venugopala and Janardhana, all connected. It is an ornately carved temple of magnificient craftmanship depicting Vishnu, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, Rathi-manmatha and mahishasura. The ceilings and door jambs leading to the sanctum sactorium are exquisitely carved.

There are inscriptions engraved on a slab standing at the entrance, inside temple , dated from 1269 to 1550 AD that detail the consrtuction of the temple and grants made to it.

The temple stands on a raised platform in the center of a spacious enclosure having 64 cells. This three celled (trikutachala) structure consists of three garbhagrihas, three antaralas and a navarang. It has a mahadwara standing on the east.

The basement of the outerwall is highly ornamented with friezes of elephants, scrolls, epic and puranic scenes, small images with intervening turrets and columns with fugures in between , number of gods and goddesses and their attendants adron the walls. The lathe turned pillars and delicately carved 16 different types of ceilings are the characteristic feature of the hoysala art. The names of a number of sculptors are carved on the pedestal of the images. It is observed that Mallithamma has not only carved the maximum number of images but also carved the northern sikhara that of Janardhana cell.

Inscriptions engraved on a huge slab standing in the mahadwara and on the beams of the navaranga ranging in date from 1269-1550 AD give the details of the construction of the temple and several grants for the upkeep of the temple.

Ranganthittu was ok...not many birds though. I could spot only around 3-4 varieties.

Costs:

Lunch = 130 INR
Misc = 40 INR

At Ranganthittu

Sringeri Kalasa Hornadu

End Time : 7am, 22th January, 2007

Motivation:
Saturday(20th Jan,2006) was pathetic as it could get. Spending a day in Bangalore(especially on weekend here has never been so easy for me).One of my pals had come down to my place and we wanted to have his lunch at McD(McDonalds@Forum) - appreciating his sense and taste i took him there and 'feasted' on a burger and coke - came back home - showed him my travel pics and bid adieu.Time:7pm.

Saturday was already over and i decided that i cannot afford to waste my Sunday like this. Decided at 7:45pm that I will visit Sringeri. Caught a bus to Majestic from Koramangala and reached the KSRTC bus stand by 8:35pm.
Luckily caught a bus to Sringeri - and got an end row seat ;)

Implementation :

And thus began my journey. Met a man(in his 30s) in the bus who introduced himselves as a 'vyapari' (businessman) and he told me that i can cover Kalasa and Hornadu along with Sringeri in a day - sounded good to me.

The bus journey from 4am was horrible. The roads were amazingly bad and i could feel each every spine in me; i was shivering badly, as i had just one wind-cheater with me.

Reached Sringeri at 6:45am (Sunday morning).I could see the beautiful Vidyashankara Temple from the entrance. Took a couple of shots from my cam and headed towards the Tunga river flowing adjacent to the temple.I was already told by my parents and my roomie to check-out the fishes in the Tunga river.I do not know the breed of the fishes - but these were one of the most healthiest fishes that i have ever seen - spanning aroung 1-2 foot long, black in color, they were silently feeding on the 'pori'(rice) and the marsh.I was still shivering , but decided that i will take a dip in the holy-tunga ('Tunga paana - Ganga snaana').To much surprise, the water wasnt so cold(or i didnt feel it, for i was all lost in the surrounding tranquility!!!) and i kept myself immersed for around 20-30mins;came out and took some snaps of the devotees and fishes.

The Vidyashankara temple amused me a lot - the architecture resembles that of Belur/Halebeedu. The raised pedestal surrounding the temple is a characteristic of the Hoysala architecture.spent some time pondering the resemblances in the architecture and appreciating the same. Then spent some time in the Sharada Devi temple (which is in the same campus). Goddess Sharada was decorated with flowers and her glowing face was like a magic potion to all the devotees.

I have been wanting to visit this temple for the past 3-4 years ; wishes fulfilled and time being 8:30am i decided to start for Kalasa from here ( also, i was informed by the temple authorities that the anna sadana will be at 1:30pm in the temple).

The serpentine roads through coffess estates was amazing.I could see the coffee harvest season in progress , with loads and loads of coffee seeds lying by the road to be picked up.

Kalasa

Reached Kalasa at 10:45am.

This small viallage+town is the abode of Sri Kalasehwara Swamy. The temple stands on a small hillock.

It is believed that during the wedding of Lord Shiva with parvati in Benaras(Varanasi) caused a heavy tilt in the earth's rotation and the earth started to move in bacause of the presence of all the gods and goddesses.Lord Shiva requested Sage Agasthya to travel downw South , so that the weight could be compensated. But Sage Agasthya had his own inihibitions and wanted to attend the marriage.Shiva promised him that he(Agasthya) will be able to see and enjoy the marriage from South. It is said that , it was here in Kalasa that Agasthya came and Shiva gave him the 'darshan'.Sage Agasthya could see the marriage from here. Hence, the marriage between Shiva and Parvati is celebrated with much grandiloquence every year here. The linga is a swambhoo linga - that is , it has
emerged from the ground.

A small shop-owner inside the temple narrated this entire story and also told me that the 'punya'(blessings) that one gets by coming here is slightly more than the one that one gets by going to Benaras. He also informed me that the Mangala-Aarthi will be at 12:30pm and i can watch that , have food(anna sadana) at 1:00pm and then start for Hornadu.

This sounded good to me; waited for the aarthi to get over and had a mediocre lunch at the temple. It consisted of Rice+Sambhar(canarian) and Buttermilk.

Bought Coffee(80INR per KG),Tea(80INR per kg) and raisins(30INR per 300gms).The coffee is of the type 'Arabica-Robusta', with 80% coffee and 20% chicory) - this is a brand which is local to this part of the region.

Started from Kalasa at 1:50pm and reached Hornadu by 2:20pm.

Hornadu

This is the holy abode of Goddess Annapoorneshwari(the Food God, according to Hindu Mythology). The anna-sadana here is considered to be really good and people flock here to have a divya-darshana of the goddess and cherish the anna-sadana(which is like a prasadam).
I had lunch here too ;) and rested in the temple verandah for 2 hours.

Had a darshan of the Goddess(yea-yea...after lunch!!!) - Mata(Mother) Annapoorneshwari was amazingly beautiful and words cannot describe the grace and the aura that was filled in the Garbha-gruha of the temple. I couldn't move my eyes away from her - but alas, the crowd from the back were yearning to catch a glimpse of her and i had to move on :( but still the image of Goddess is still in my eyes.

Around 4pm, i went on a small stroll and trekked a little in the adjonining forests. Also, happened to see a Jain Basadi here.

Came back to the temple by 6pm and rested.Dinner was again served in the temple.Left Hornadu by 9:30pm and reached Bangalore(Majestic at 6am); and in my room by 7am.

Costs:

Bangalore(Majestic) to Sringeri =198 INR
Sringeri to Kalasa = 37INR
Kalasa to Hornadu = 6 INR
Hornadu to Bangalore(Majestic) = 280INR (it costs 180INR in KSRTC bus though)

Misc:
Night Dinner (Fri) = 40INR
Morning Tea(Sat) +Breakfast = 34INR
Sringeri PRasadam = 20INR
Kalsa Pics + Prasadam = 20INR
@Kalasa, Cofee Powder(1kg)+Tea Leaves(.5kg)+Raisins = 80+40+30 = 150INR

Mysore a.k.a Mahishi-ooru

Decided to try some shots with my camera over the weekend - booked ticket for a 1-day sight seeing tour in Mysore via KSTDC(Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation).Never been on a conducted tour before with lots of junta, hence thought of trying this out :)

Mysore is considered to be the place wherein Goddess Chamundi(Durga) slained the daemon Mahishasur. This town was prviously called as 'Mahishi-ooru'.

Tour :
1) Chennarayapatna - famous for wooden toys - went to a Shop

2) Srirangapatna - Tipu Sultan's Capital. There were 4 wars that were fought here, and Tipu was killed in the last(4th) war by the Britishers.

2.a) Daria Daulat - Tipu's Summer Palace
Amazing paintings on the walls of the palace.Photography not allowed inside. The walls(paintings) have been protected with wooden structures(green sheets in the photo) to guard them.

2.b) Tipu's Fort - one of the strongest forts ever built(now in ruins).Britishers ,during the fourth war, brought the Main Palace (inside the Fort) down. There was supposedly only one entrance to the fort; during the 4th war, Tipu's Defence Minister betrayed him and revealed the secret entrance to the Britishers, via which they could enter the city, invade and kill Tipu. The photos show the secret entrance and the place where Tipu was killed.

Place where Tipu was supposedly killed

The secret entrance

2.c) Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple - This is a 1200 year old temple inside the Fort. The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu, reclining on Adishesha(the hooded serpent). The temple has a beautiful blend of Hoysala and Vijayanagara Architecture. From the 'Sri Ranganatha swamy', this town gets the name 'Srirangapatna'.

3) St.Philomina's Church - nice church , though i couldnt find anything great or exceptionally splendid about it.

4) Mysore Palace - One of the must see places in Mysore. This palace was built over a period of 15 years at an estimated cost of 42lakhs then. All the materials that have been used to build this palace were imported from foreigh countries. I was spellbound by the Indo-Sarcenic architecture. There were traces of Gothic architecture at some places. The marriage and private halls inside the Palace were amazingly beautiful. The walls were beautiful painted with various instances of Mysore and royal kingdom processions. Wooden roofs with intricate carvings were treat for the eyes. One could also see the Royal memorabilia inside the palace.Photography is not allowed inside the palace, hence couldnt capture some of the finest pieces of art.

5) Krishnaraja Sagar Dam and Brindavan Gardens
Built by Vishweswaraya during the rule of Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar, KRS dam is a fine creation that irrigates the Mandya and the neighbouring districts.Mandya is called the sugar capital also, one can find only Sugarcane crops(and some paddy) here - the area is irrigated by the KRS dam. Govt has provided enough aquaducts for this region.

Bridavan Gardens is situated at the base of KRS dam.Couple of years back one had to walk on top of KRS dam to reach Brindavan Gardens, but now Government has constucted a different road and parking facilities to reach the base of the gardens directly.Highyl crowded place - didnt feel like taking snaps.

Pics can be found here

Note:
1) Do not take this trip on a holiday, as the places are highly crowded
2) Mysore palace - must see
3) Cheap tour and places are covered fast; Credits to KSTDC and to the tour guide
4) Not a tour worth photography

Costs:
Tour Ticket Cost (KSTDC): 435 INR
Entry Tickets at Srirangapatna+Mysore Palace+Brindavan Gardens : 40INR
Camera Locker Charges @ Mysore Palace: 10INR
Camera Charges @ Brindavan Gardens: 40INR

It was a long weekend of Christmas and a group of trekkers decided to summit OG. After the initial hiccups in getting the tickets for Gundiya CheckPost, yours truly finally managed to get tickets for all 4 in a private bus.[What would otherwise cost 150INR/head costed us 250INR/head..and hence clearly overshooting our shoe-string budget]

Reached Gundiya CheckPost at around 6:30am. We did not have any breakfast/tea at the CheckPost, as we had enough ration for 2-3 days and had decided that we would break for brunch at around 9-10am near Sangama (the first river to be crossed). We took the right turn near the bridge and continued ; halted near the river for 15mins to brush our teeth and had a dose of chocolates(that Reem had got for us from Dubai).

We continued from there, crossing minor streamlets. Leeches continued to torment us. We continued and reached Sangama at 10am. Took a long break of around 1hour 15mins - relaxed in the clear water and finished the morning chores , had a light breakfast and continued our trek. After around 12 pm, the terrain was dry and there were hardly any signs of leeches.

To be included:
-- the continuous 4 hrs ascent
-- camping on the hill-by the side of OG
-- the 1 hour ascent to the tallest peak of OG
-- water!!

Costs:
Bangalore to Gundiya CheckPost = 250 INR
Hosekere to Mudigere = 14 INR
Mudigere to Hassan = 35 INR

Evening at Lalbagh

Myself and Arvind had been to Lalbagh last weekend. The plan was to go there by around 4pm and take some snaps of the flowers and the sunset. Arvind informed me that there was a flower-show happening and we could take some great snaps. We reached Lalbagh at around 5 (after crusading with the traffic) and finally found out that there was no flower-show but a jatre(a show) was under-progress.

Took some pics of the sunset.....

Google for Edu ; Coghead

Happened to see this link from Seth's Blog. Can this be Google's foray into Content Management Systems (CMS)!!

More and more innovative ideas are getting transformed into business models and practices on the Internet. Guy talks about Coghead - a web-based package/application to create dynamic applications with very little turn around time.

Oracle already has a similar kind of a tool called Oracle Application Express(Apex) , formerly called HTMLDB, that lets one develop database cohesive web-based applications very easily.

IIMB - Vista 06

After a good party on thursday night(nice Scotch!) and a good cutural fest on friday evening and a fantabulous evening on Saturday(Dandiya+DJ night), i was physically exhausted. My back was aching badly after the Dandiya night(inspite of the hot water bath and nice sleep). As i was just thinking about Sunday, VISTA-06 flashed across my ignominious brain! Myself and my roomie planned that its gonna be some mental exhaustion now - and we decided that we would go for IIMB-Vista 06(a B-School event) and participate in the Business Quiz(Bizzarre).

We reached the campus at around 2pm on Sunday and registered for the quiz - i was happpy to see the 'usual' teams again over here! Sethu appeared from nowhere and we quickly formed a team and registered. After waiting for sometime, the quiz started at 3:30pm(prelims) - a quick written round with typical Derek O'Brien questions!

After the prelims , we headed towards the audi to witness the event baptised as 'Numero Uno' - this was supposedly to be the hunt for the next CEO! I was quite curious to see 'potential CEOs' and how they performed. However, it was again a sordid tale - 5 finalists - and only one(an ex-army major with 17years of work-ex) was quite enthusiastic and charismatic. It was a hands-down victory for the Major. All the others were school kids in fron of him - just hurling management jargons :)

After that loitered around the campus for sometime and by 7pm, the quiz started - the finalists were anounced - i was happy to see the standard teams qualifying - inspite of the fact that we missed it by a whisker :(

Derek gave out the answers for the prelims and 'your truly' was fortunate enough to get an audience prize for answering the expansion of YSM (its a service launched by Yahoo in India - Yahoo Search Marketing). After that the regular rounds followed, with 'yours truly' answering many Qs .There was this Q on the language 'Qwechua' -- as in its claim to fame! none of the finalists could answer it ..and 'yours truly' again showed his 'cheap brilliance' here and answered the Q - Derek called me on stage gave me some prizes...a huge applause followed...

At the end of the day - i was still a loser - another quiz failed to qualify and sitting among the audience and winning some prizes - though the 'knowledge' factor was present, but the fun of being on stage as a 'finalist' is different!

Hope i make it soon to the podium ! Amen!

Code Searches

Yesterday Google launched its new product : CodeSearch.

Although this has generated lots of enthusiasm and interest in the developer (Ctrl+C/V) community, but still there exists a similar site which provides almost equivalent services.
This product is : Krugle

I had stumbled across this site 3-4 weeks back and was impressed with their work; at the same time i was very much sure that Google must be working on a similar product(to keep churning out new products in the 'Search-Space')

+ves of Krugle
--------------------
** Good Ajax, coupled with good performance

** Sleek interface

** "Related Results" Field - eventhough this is still displays very-very restricted number of sponsored links, yet it looks good

** The prescence of a drop-down at the top navigation bar that lists down the languages in which the user wants to search/ Though this feature is also present in Google's CodeSearch - but is still similar to a GoogleHack wherein the programmer has to key in the search phrase like
"lang:lisp xml lang:"c++" sprintf.*%s" to search

Google CodeSearch Features
------------------------------------
** Google's 'proprietary' simple page

** Lots of google hacks to be used

** Adv Search has to be used to utilize advanced code-search features

** Potential Ads in the search-result page.

Both the services are devoid of any Ads as of now, but as the news article states we can expect some ads to be placed in the CodeSearch once it has been received well.Krugle's placement of 'Sponsored Links' in its result list is quite promising and also is user friendly.
